Sahadat Hossain: "With plastic roads we can pave the way for a more sustainable future."

Dr Sahadat Hossain's main drivers are mitigating environmental harm and safeguarding public health. He is a professor of civil engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington and the director of the Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability (SWIS). In his conversation with WMW, he discussed how incorporating recycled plastic into pavement construction can address the plastic waste crisis and enhance the longevity of roads.

The construction industry has great potential to become green(er). One way is to use recycled plastics in building materials. Canadian company Green Mantra has developed a special polymer additive sourced from polypropylene and polyethylene recycled materials from across North America ‒ streams of waste plastic that are typically more difficult to recycle by traditional mechanical recycling, such as various types of packaging materials. Domenic Di Mondo, CEO of GreenMantra Technologies, talks with WMW about sustainable waste management in both the roofing and paving industries, his company's innovative technology and a more eco-friendly future for asphalt-based products.
